WUSD selects Vehmeyer as Principal for Brooks Elementary

PRESS RELEASE

Windsor, Calif.—Windsor Unified School District (WUSD) is pleased to announce that Shannon Vehmeyer, currently serving as interim principal of Brooks Elementary School, has been selected as the principal for Brooks for the 2025-26 school year. Vehmeyer had been serving as the Dean of Students, when former principal Annette Zucconi was selected as the Director of Curriculum and Instruction for the District in January. Vehmeyer has stepped in as interim principal this spring, and has now been selected to take the position permanently.

Vehmeyer is a true homegrown administrator, as she grew up in Windsor and attended Windsor schools. She began her teaching career at Brooks in 1995, after receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies and a teaching credential from Chico State University. She spent 13 years in the classroom at both Brooks, and the former Windsor elementary school, Windsor Creek.

She received her administrative credential from Sonoma State in 2003, and would serve as a principal at both Brooks and Windsor Middle School, before returning to the classroom, and the dean position.

"Taking over as principal feels like coming home, a true full circle moment,” Vehmeyer said.

“We always want to promote from within and “grow our own” administrators whenever possible, and Shannon is a great example of that,” said Superintendent Jeremy Decker. “We are very excited to have her continue leading the Brooks community.”

“While we had many excellent candidates, it was clear that Shannon was ready, skilled, and able to carry on from Annette’s great work, and keep moving Brooks forward in a fantastic way,” said Director of Human Resources Pete Sullivan. “We’re thrilled to have her continue as principal.”

Vehmeyer’s two children Jordyn and Chase and her  “bonus kiddo,” Makhi, all attended and graduated from Windsor schools. She was also the first Windsor High School cheer coach, a position now held by her daughter Jordyn.

Vehmeyer is now looking ahead to the end of this school year, and the beginning of next school year, and is ready to get to work at the campus she considers home.

“I am honored and excited to build upon the foundation of excellence we have established and to continue guiding our students toward success and growth,” she said.
